The "Sound of Music" (en español "Sonrisas y Lágrimas" y también "La novicia rebelde") es una película rodada en 1965 sobre un musical espléndido que se estrenó en Broadway y cuyo argumento está basada en la historia real de María von Trapp y su familia de músicos que por motivos de la 1ª guerra mundial tuvo que emigrar de Austria a Estados Unidos donde tuvieron mucho éxito con su grupo llamado primero Trapp Family Choir y después The Trapp Family Singers.La historia cuenta como en 1938, en los meses previos a la anexión de Austria por parte de Alemania (el Anschluss), en un convento de la ciudad de Salzburgo, María (Julie Andrews), una joven novicia con una clara falta de disciplina, es enviada por la Madre Abadesa (Peggy Wood) a casa del Capitán Georg Ritter von Trapp (Christopher Plummer) para que ejerza de institutriz de sus siete hijos. El Capitán Von Trapp es un viudo que mantiene a raya a su prole con un estilo autoritario y dominante, prácticamente igual que en sus tiempos en la Armada Imperial Austrohúngara. María pronto se hace con el cariño de los niños, enseñándolos a jugar y a cantar...
El éxito de la película, ganadora de 5 oscars, la ha mantenido vigente durante más de 40 años y tanto es así que una de las atracciones turísticas de Salzburgo es un tour de cuatro horas por los lugares en que se rodó y que en un céntrico teatro de Londres con lleno total de público se sigue representando el musical que cuenta con una puesta en escena magistral y mágica, de lo que puedo dar fe porque tuve la suerte de disfrutar de la representación hace dos veranos.
