Nahat Hanh was one of those who decided to do both things, helping to found the movemente of "Engaged Buddhism". He has dedicated his life, since then, to the work of the personal transformation for the benefit of individuals and society.

At the begining of the 1960s, in Saigon, Thich Nhat Hahn founded the School for Social Service, an organization of asistance for the reconstruction of the bombed-out towns and villages, building schools and medical centers, the rehousing of families, and the organization of agricultural cooperatives.

Despite the opposition of the Vietnamese Government, Nhat Hahn also founded the Buddhist University, a publising house and an influential magazine of activism for peace in Vietnam.

After visiting the United States in 1966 on a peace mission, he was banned to return to Vietnam. In his following travels to the United States, he had interviews with federal officials and the Pentagon, as Robert McNamara, whom he presented arguments to stop the war and ask peace.

May be that Nhat Hahn has helped to change the course of the history of the United States, when he asked Martin Luther King to oppose the Vietnam war publicy, helping, in this way, the movement for peace. The following day, King nominated Thich Nhat Hahn for the Nobel Peaced Prize. Later, Nhat Hanh led the Buddhist delegation at the Summit for peace in Paris.

In 1982 he founded Plum Village, a Buddhist community in exile, in France, where he continues his work of aid to refugees, the so-called "boat people", political prisoners and poor families of Vietnam and all over the world. He has also received a deserved recognition for their work by Vietnam Veterans, for his retreats for meditation and his prolific literacy work on meditation, full consciousness and peace.

In September 2001, just a few days after the attacks on the World Trade Center, he gave a memorable speech on non violence and forgiveness, at the Riverside Churh in New York. In September 2003, he gave a speech to members of the Congress or the United States, in a two-days retreat.
