Various European countries claim the original of the tune we know as Yankee Doodle, and it was the British who brought it to America during the French and Indian Wars. The opening words of the song refer to the fact that when Oliver Cromwell rode horseback into Oxford in 1653 he wore a hat decorated with a single feather fastened by an elaborate knot — an Italian decoration called a "macaroni." The British troops used the song and the term sarcastically, to ridicule the makeshift appearance of the dress of American Colonial troops. When the Revolution began, the Americans adopted the song as a rallying tune, and it was played by fifers and drummers in every camp and battle. At the British surrender at Yorktown on Oct. 19, 1781, the American army band played Yankee Doodle to celebrate the American victory and so it became one of the best wellknown patriotic USsongs.
Varios países europeos reclaman el original de la melodía que conocemos como Yankee (*) Doodle (**), y fueron los británicos los que la llevaron a Estados Unidos durante las Guerras descolonizadoras de Gran Bretaña contra Francia. Las palabras de la canción se refieren al hecho de que cuando Oliver Cromwell montó a caballo en Oxford en el año 1653 llevaba un sombrero adornado con una sola pluma sujeta por un nudo complicado — una decoración italiana llamada "un macarrón"-. Las tropas británicas utilizaban la canción y el término sarcásticamente, para ridiculizar el aspecto improvisado de la vestimenta de las tropas americanas coloniales. Cuando empezó la revolución, los estadounidenses adoptaron la canción como un canto de protesta, y que tocaban todos los flautines y tamborileros en cada campo de batalla. En la rendición británica en Yorktown el 19 de octubre de 1781, la banda del ejército estadounidense jugó yanqui para celebrar la victoria americana y así se convirtió en una de las más conocidas canciones patrióticas de EEUU.
