BIOGRAPHY OF THICH NHAT HAHN

One of the zen masters known and more respected in the world, poet, activist for peace and human rights, Thich Nhat Hahn (his students call him Thay, meaning "master") has had an extraordinary life. He was born in central Vietnam, in 1926, and became a monk at the age of 16 years.

Uno de los maestros zen más conocidos y respetados del mundo, poeta, activista por la paz y los derechos humanos, Thich Nhat Hahn (sus estudiantes lo llaman Thay, que significa "maestro") ha tenido una vida extraordinaria. Nació en el Vietnam central, en 1926, y se convirtió en monje a la edad de 16 años. 

The Vietnam war confronted the monasteries to the difficult question of whether lead a comtemplative life and dedicated only to meditation in the monasteries or help their fellow citizens who suffered under the attacks of the pumps and the devastation of the war.

La guerra de Vietnam enfrentó a los monasterios a la difícil cuestión de decidir si llevar una vida contemplativa y dedicarse solo a la meditación en los monasterios o ayudar a sus conciudadanos que sufrían bajo los ataques de las bombas y la devastación de la guerra. 

Nahat Hanh was one of those who decided to do both things, helping to found the movemente of  "Engaged Buddhism". He has dedicated his life, since then, to the work of the personal transformation for the benefit of individuals and society.

Nhat Hanh fue uno de los que decidió hacer ambas cosas, ayudando a fundar el movimiento del "Budismo comprometido". Ha dedicado su vida, desde entonces, al trabajo de la transformación personal para el beneficio de los individuos y la sociedad.

At  the begining of the 1960s, in Saigon, Thich Nhat Hahn founded the School for Social Service, an organization of asistance for the reconstruction of the  bombed-out towns and villages, building schools and medical centers, the rehousing of families, and the organization of agricultural cooperatives.

Al principio de los años 60, en Saigón, Thich Nhat Hahn fundó la Escuela para el Servicio de Ayuda Social, una organización de ayuda para la reconstrucción de los pueblos y aldeas bombardeadas, la construcción de escuelas y centros médicos, el realojamiento de familias y la organización de cooperativas agrícolas. 

With the help of more than 10,000 volunteers students, the SYSS based its work on the Buddhist principles of non-violence and compassionate action. Despite the opposition of the Vietnamese Government, Nhat Hahn also founded the Buddhist University, a publising house and an influential magazine of activism for peace in Vietnam.

Con la ayuda de más de 10.000 estudiantes voluntarios, la SYSS basó su trabajo en los principios budistas de no violencia y acción compasiva. A pesar de la oposición del gobierno vietnamita, Nhat Hahn también fundó la Universidad Budista, una editorial y una influyente revista de activismo por la paz, en Vietnam.

After visiting the United States in 1966 on a peace mission, he was banned to return to Vietnam. In his following travels to the United States, he had interviews with federal officials and the Pentagon, as Robert McNamara, whom he presented arguments to stop the war and ask peace.

Tras visitar los Estados Unidos en 1966 en misión de paz, se le prohibió su vuelta a Vietnam. En sus viajes siguientes a los Estados Unidos, tuvo entrevistas con oficiales federales y del Pentágono, como Robert McNamara, a los que presentó argumentos para detener la guerra y pedir la paz. 

May be that Nhat Hahn has helped to change the course of the history of the United States, when he asked Martin Luther King to oppose the Vietnam war publicy, helping, in this way, the movement for peace. The following day, King nominated Thich Nhat Hahn for the Nobel Peaced Prize. Later, Nhat Hanh led the Buddhist delegation at the Summit for peace in Paris.

Puede que Nhat Hahn haya ayudado a cambiar el curso de la historia de los Estados Unidos, cuando pidió a Martin Luther King que se opusiera a la guerra de Vietnam públicamente, ayudando, de esta manera, al movimiento por la paz. Al año siguiente, King nominó a Thich Nhat Hahn para el Premio Nóbel de la Paz. Más tarde, Nhat Hanh encabezó la delegación Budista en la Cumbre por la Paz en Paris. 

In 1982 he founded Plum Village, a Buddhist community in exile, in France, where he continues his work of aid to refugees, the so-called "boat people", political prisoners and poor families of Vietnam and all over the world. He has also received a deserved recognition for their work by Vietnam Veterans, for his retreats for meditation and his prolific literacy work on meditation, full consciousness and peace.

En 1982 fundó Plum Village, una comunidad Budista en el exilio, en Francia, donde continua su trabajo de ayuda a los refugiados, los llamados "gente de los barcos", prisioneros políticos, y familias pobres de Vietnam y de todo el mundo. También ha recibido un merecido reconocimiento por su trabajo por los Veteranos de Vietnam, por sus retiros de meditación y su prolífica obra literaria sobre meditación, plena consciencia y paz. 

He has published 85 books of poetry, prose, prayer, from which 40 are in English, including the bestsellers, "Call me by my True Names", "Peace is in Every Step", "Being Peace", "Touching the Peace", "Living Buddha, living Christ", "Teachings of Love", "The Way of Emancipation" and "Rage".

Ha publicado 85 libros de poesía, prosa, oraciones, de los cuales 40 están en inglés, incluyendo los más vendidos, "Llámame por mis verdaderos nombres", "La paz está en cada paso", "Ser paz", "Tocando la paz", "Buda viviente, Cristo viviente", "Enseñanzas sobre el amor", "El camino de la emancipación", e "Ira". 

In September 2001, just a few days after the attacks on the World Trade Center, he gave a memorable speech on non violence and forgiveness, at the Riverside Churh in New York. In September 2003, he gave a speech to members of the Congress or the United States, in a two-days retreat.

En Septiembre del 2001, justo pocos días tras los ataques al World Trade Center, dió un memorable discurso sobre la no violencia y el perdón, en la Iglesia Riverside de Nueva York. En Septiembre del 2003 pronunció un discurso a miembros del congreso de los Estados Unidos, en un retiro de dos días. 

Thich Nhat Hahn continues living in Plum Village, the community of meditation which he founded, where he teaches, writes and work in the gardens; he leads retreats worldwide on the "art of conscious life".

Thich Nhat Hahn continua viviendo en Plum Village, en la comunidad de meditación que él fundó, donde enseña, escribe y trabaja en los jardines; dirige retiros por todo el mundo sobre el "arte de la vida consciente".
